trento in jazz
5 Trento in jazz

The magical worlds of Nicola Cici, halfway between dream and memory of past emotions

In contemporary life, that contemplative approach to what surrounds the individual has often been lost, as if noise could overpower profound sensations or distract from that contact with an interiority that despite everything needs to make its voice heard; some artists make the more or less conscious choice to distance themselves from that too-rapid reality by creating a parallel universe where everything seems to take on a different meaning by virtue of the rarefied atmosphere that envelops it and the suggestion that the visible exerts when it is dropped into a different dimension. Today’s protagonist has this kind of approach, perhaps unconsciously dreamy, through which he narrates the emotions received from a familiar glimpse, a memory, musical notes, allowing the observer to feel immediately involved in the images.

Once the most revolutionary phase of the early 20th century had passed, some artists began to feel the need to recover that contact with visible reality previously denied, literally rejected by all the avant-gardes that had dominated the international art scene; expressivity no longer had to adhere to total abstraction, nor did it have to detach itself from the subjectivity of the author of an artwork. On the contrary, around the 1930s and 1940s, it was realised that the purity of the plastic gesture did not have to exclude interiority in order to enhance art as a world in itself, nor could the description of what was caught with the gaze distract from a deeper and more intense involvement than mere observation. Already with Expressionism, reality had been pandered to the artist’s emotions, but even the excesses of that movement began to be overcome in order to establish the need for a return to order that took shape in Milan with the Novecento group, of which Mario Sironi, with his panoramic atmospheres of city views where there was often no trace of a human figure, was one of the greatest exponents, and in Rome with the Roman School, of which were interpreters Antonietta Raphaël and Mario Mafai in which, in different ways, emerged the personalisation and freedom with which the exponents of the current could express their interiority, through their own personal inclination.

Descriptive of the multifaceted emotions of the human figure placed in an unreal and suspended universe the former, oriented instead towards recounting the emptiness of cities when the streets are devoid of human life the latter, yet both were capable of giving a new face to art, a sort of encounter between Expressionism and Realism from which a soft, evocative, contemplative style was generated that expanded to generate other styles, one of which was Magic Realism. The investigative gaze of the artists of these two important movements of the last century dwelt on subtle energies, those noticeable only through perception and that managed to be imprinted on canvas thanks to that sense of order, of tranquillity, that the images sent back. The Trentino artist Nicola Cici, self-taught more due to almost obligatory life choices than to a lack of desire to undertake adequate studies, stands as the heir of both painting movements, the Novecento group and the Roman School, to which he also mixes a tendency towards Expressionism, stripped, however, of the dark and restless emotions of the Nordic artists, approaching instead the more dreamy and fairytale-like atmospheres of Marc Chagall.

The pictorial narrative seems to be a journey through the drawers of memory that the artist feels the need to manifest, filtering everything through his inner world, through the sensations aroused by certain places, landscapes or occasions that have caught his attention, conquered his sensitivity, or transported him to a magical dimension, as in the encounter with music. The colour is always acrylic, the tones tend to be earthy and orange when he pushes himself to open the drawers of his most distant memories, those linked to his childhood or to places that are constantly before his eyes, as if he wanted to lose himself in them in order to emphasise the sensations received within those landscapes that are known and yet to be discovered because it is only by virtue of his approach to the canvas that it is possible to go back over previously overlooked details. But the most evident characteristic of Nicola Cici’s works is the surface that appears rough, materic, in relief, as if the artist wanted to hold back the sensations that therefore become more intense, more solid, less elusive; the passage between present reality and evocation of the past does not in fact exist and so its atmospheres, its glimpses are suspended in time, they have neither past nor future, but only the present of the moment in which the eyes rest there or the mind returns to it. The canvas El canton represents exactly this, the capacity of a place to be the mirror of the artist’s interiority, no matter what city it belongs to, how many people crowd its streets every day, what manages to emerge thanks to Cici’s approach is the suspension of time generated by the absence of man, an often distracting element that diverts the observer’s attention from those subtle energies that only emerge in the moment of silence, of suggestion. The earthy, orange tones help emphasise the contrast between the night and the lights of the street lamps, which are not depicted, as if the artist had placed them outside the field of vision, themselves potential obstacles to the flow of the gaze. In the artwork Sanctuary under the moon the atmosphere becomes even more spiritual, as if the building wanted to watch over everything below the steps, as if the moon were a guiding light for those who feel the need to approach that place; here too, however, the human presence is missing, and this perhaps in some way represents Nicola Cici’s point of view that contact with the deeper self, with the essence, or with religion, should be left at a higher level, of greater solitude, because it is often from being alone with oneself that one is able to understand the most hidden, the deepest sensations, and therefore in need of protection from the outside.

The silence enveloping the image is in this case perhaps even more immobile, while the marked lines tracing the outlines of the stairs and buildings emphasise the solemnity of the sanctuary. In the artworks more related to music, on the other hand, the chromatic range changes and tends towards blues and light blues, while the perfect order of the previous canvases is completely subverted by a perspective disorder that seems to go along with the musical notes, those of the enthralling and exciting jazz or the more traditional ones of Vivaldi, but in any case always capable of giving a greater value to everything that is enveloped by those melodies. In Summertime, the trumpet player seems to be resting on a moving flying carpet on which he can rise above the contingent reality and dream of a better world, more indefinite, less schematic and yet incredibly more fascinating and capable of allowing a glimpse of that happiness that often arises when one has the courage to break a previous equilibrium. And perhaps it is this task that Nicola Cici attributes to artists, whether they are musicians, painters or sculptors it does not matter, that of being messengers of different possibilities, of showing options that others cannot perceive without their help. So the human being, completely absent in the more panoramic canvases, only appears if it is functional to the dream, to the enchantment of an escape often sought but then left behind among the things to be done sooner or later. Or, as in the artwork What is happening to me?, it becomes the protagonist of the discomforts, of the anxieties generated by the unawareness of one’s real essence that contemporary man is forced to face, undecided whether to show his true face or the mask he has become accustomed to, uncertain whether to go along with the transition towards evolution or to remain attached to the previous cage, the one he would like to free himself from without having the courage to do so. Nicola Cici, a talented artist from a very young age, set aside his dream, without ever abandoning it, for many years, until 2015 when he enrolled in a course by Maestro Albert, which was the turning point towards his true artistic career that is bringing him to the attention of experts in the field.
