The fluctuating world of Achao, between aquatic atmospheres and an evocative search for spirituality

In contemporary life, the human being, and consequently also the artist, often has to come to terms with a speed, with an agitated rush within a noisy, chaotic life that often forces one to forget to cultivate that relationship with oneself, that contact with the inner world necessary not to forget the true essence; the role of artists is therefore transformed not only into a way of manifesting their own personal feelings, but also into a means of leading the viewer back to his depths through the world of colour, of the image, no matter whether it is more relevant to the reality observed or completely impalpable and detached from it. The French Achao literally accompanies the observer into his fluid universe, in which colours and experience are in constant flux and becoming.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the emergence of Abstractionism led towards a total detachment from the emotional world in order to place the emphasis on plastic perfection capable of subsisting without the influence of the artwork’s executor, actually it was not meant to be a reflection of any emotion but rather an expression of the logical and analytical approach that certain movements such as De Stijl, Suprematism, and Geometric Abstractionism had established as the indispensable basis of their artistic manifestos. Parallel to that very rational point of view in the way of making art, however, there were currents that, on the contrary, based their very existence on the inescapability of inner drives, to the point of distorting the appearance of reality in order to make it akin to, an interpretative voice of, that profound world that had to reach the observer and overwhelm him. Expressionism found in the world of emotions the lifeblood on which to draw to release anxieties, anguish, fears or, on the contrary, the dream, lightness, the desire to escape from reality to tend towards a better world; from the gloomy atmospheres of Edvard Munch to the childlike ones of Marc Chagall, the movement marked a clear opposition to the hyper-rational universe of Abstractionism, which had taken a completely different direction from its lyrical founder Vassily Kandinsky. These two very divergent expressive universes were, however, destined sooner or later to encounter a meeting point, a conjugation capable of tuning the non-existence of form and detachment from reality with the irrationality of non-form, and this middle ground took the name of Abstract Expressionism.

One of the major artists of the early decades of the 20th century who adapted to this transformation by modifying his style to go along with and bear witness to the changing times and the inevitable evolution that the art world was facing, was Henri Matisse who, from a Fauves beginning, thus favouring a palette of intense colours full and almost aggressive ones, moved towards a more moderate, more harmonious and calm Expressionism until moving towards absolute abstraction in which a more playful point of view emerged, more tending towards a reconciliation with nature in order to seek through non-form, the true essence of life. It is precisely from this 20th century master that the French artist Achao draws his inspiration, who in turn starts from a more figurative past in which the classical images of warriors and Olympic players were stylised but also immortalised in the phase of movement, as studied and analysed by Eadweard Muybridge, another great master of the past, in this case of photography; in the course of time and the continuation of his artistic research, Achao in turn gradually began to move towards an abstraction that almost becomes a search for silence, the same that proves necessary to deepen one’s knowledge of oneself by tuning in to the musicality of the rhythm of meditation, of reflection functional to finding a close contact with that spirituality that contemporary man often tends to miss. Here, then, his new artworks turn into a suggestive world into which to enter and immerse, letting oneself be carried away by the current of emotions and harmony that arises from the meditative phase as indicated by oriental philosophies, especially the Buddhist one, which Achao embraces and then spreads to the observer. The canvases are large, to arouse an immersive sensation, revealing a desire on the part of the artist to involve the senses through the strong tones yet juxtaposed in such a way as to appear soft, almost pastel, outlining circular, elongated forms, from which one receives the sensation of being in an aquatic universe comparable to that of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies in which everything flows, everything is ready to take on different forms based on circumstances, events, but also awareness. Heraclitus’ theory thus becomes an essential premise for Achao’s works, since it is only through the ability to let go of evidence that one can discover the profound meaning of individual progress and also of the world around us, it is only by accepting the flow of things that one can welcome that constant movement as a resource of inner progress.

The artist’s invitation is to listen, to indulge the tendency towards calm, towards the equilibrium that can be achieved by letting oneself be lulled by silence, by the rhythm of one’s own thought and by the conjunction with a spirituality that leads to feeling in harmony with one’s surroundings, with that nature that becomes a background and soundtrack capable of overpowering the underlying chaos, of extinguishing the noise that leads human beings to forget to pay attention to the substance, to the essence. The production of more recent artworks entitled Più vicino del Paradiso (Closer than Paradise), which also gives the title to his next exhibition at the Galleria delle Logge in Assisi from 21 to 27 June, emphasises the immersive aspect precisely because of the large dimensions and lack of frames, thus the artworks amplify the fluctuating tendency of the forms that are the protagonists, as well as showing the ornamental character of Achao’s art. Some of the canvases show profiles defined by the colour gold to induce the eye to wander, to lose itself in the non-form, almost in search of a meaning, the same that can be found through Buddhist meditation indicated by the artist through the stylisation of the Dhamek stupa of Sarnath in India, which had characterised the series of previous artworks and which is in this case juxtaposed with unprecedented motifs that come close to design and the world of interior decoration. The juxtaposition of fuchsias, greens and blues with the yellow and beige of the background instil in the eye a sense of softness, of volatility, but at the same time of possibility, because consciousness learns that it is only by beginning to float above the everyday, above reality that it is possible to move towards a better dimension, more detached from contingency and more aware that everything that happens, and that often afflicts in the present moment, is part of a larger, more complex design, evolving in an unimagined direction, in many cases even better than expected.

The creative process has led Achao to come to terms with his own emotions, to absorb afflictions on a more universal level by letting them flow onto the canvas, giving shape to positive feelings but also to negative ones such as anger, which can only be understood and overcome if faced, brought to the surface and analysed in its motivations. Therefore, Achao’s one is an Abstract Expressionism that tends towards lyricism, towards the suggestive rhythm of fluid movement through which one can reach a higher knowledge and awareness, abstracting oneself from a contemporary life that is sometimes too ephemeral, too oriented towards the race for material goods, in order to begin again to put individuality in the foreground, that inner rhythm that is slower than the external one but necessary to exalt the characteristics of the human being, to exhort modern man to remain human. Achao regularly participates in group and solo exhibitions in France and abroad, and particularly enjoys exhibiting in Italy, a country that he loves and that has always welcomed him with interest and involvement; the one in Assisi is his second solo exhibition in our country and promises to be a great success with the public, especially because of the spiritual connection that envelops his evocative artworks.
