The contradictions and dualism of living in the Material Informal of Doro Saharita Becker

The creative impetus is very often unable to express itself in its entirety when it sticks to two-dimensionality, because emotions have such an important and considerable relevance in the soul and feelings of some artists that they require a different kind of approach in which their substance emerges and comes out of the canvas itself. Today’s protagonist is characterised by a strongly material style precisely to highlight and underline the consistency of a world of sensations that belongs to man and to contemporary life.

Around the 1940s a new artistic movement began to spread throughout the world, which on the one hand continued to emphasise the need to affirm the superiority of art in the purity of its plastic gesture with respect to known form and aesthetically related to observed reality, but on the other hand wanted to break away from the mathematical and scientific rigour of previous movements such as Geometric Abstractionism, Neoplasticism and Spatialism, to give prevalence to the importance of the expression of emotion. Informal Art, the name of the new trend of those years, was in turn divided into Abstract Expressionism, for which all the artist needed was colour and then letting go in an impulsive but also more meditated way according to the character of each painter, and the Material Informal in which the artist needed to use everyday objects or substantial elements that should help to move towards the viewer of the artwork by virtue of the discovery of the third dimension and at the same time manifest the solid substance of feeling. Sand, stones, newspaper, glass shards, jute, canvas sacks, glue and plastic were the materials through which each artist experimented, choosing what he felt most akin to his own expressive nature in a new way, opting for a new language compared to all previous art but also to the coeval artists of sign painting.

What mattered to Alberto Burri, Jean Fautrier and Antoni Tapìes was not the choice of colours through which to give voice to emotions, as was strongly affirmed by Jackson Pollock, but rather the way of applying tempera, oil and acrylic so that they could best enhance the form and consistency of the emotions represented by the solid, three-dimensional compositions made up of matter. Doro Saharita Becker, a German artist with a decidedly cosmopolitan lifestyle, has spent long periods of time in India, Australia and South-East Asia, absorbing from the countries she has visited not only an understanding of the multifaceted multiplicity of reality and points of view, but also the awareness that each passage, each path, constitutes a constant evolution in the human being who, consequently, cannot remain the same even if he wanted to. It goes without saying that this type of awareness is also evident in her artistic style, which is strongly material in order to emphasise the concreteness of feeling, of the emotions that belong to the individual, and at the same time iridescent, changeable through the fluid use of colour that rests, literally clings to the material, enriching it with a luminosity that makes the final result iridescent and therefore in apparent movement. She allows herself to be inspired by nature and by the strength of women in which that dualism, that ambivalence that narrates the alternation, the balance, between strength and fragility, between softness and hardness, between firmness and surrender, which distinguishes the entire artistic production of Doro Saharita Becker, emerges more clearly.

In Aufbruch (Departure) the artist fully expresses that sense of mobility, of uncertainty that characterises the events of existence, that going followed by a return or representing a definitive exit; the plaster, marble dust, epoxy resin and pigments make the stratified surface of the canvas rough and then, as a final touch, she applies glossy, iridescent acrylic paint to instil a sense of movement and possibility that is not only part of the nature of the human being but also of contemporary life, where certainties are even more impalpable, almost insubstantial in their fleetingness. Tagesanbruch (End of the Day) is the narration of a natural, everyday phenomenon to which the eye is so accustomed that it overlooks its beauty, its majesty and the emotional impact it can have; Doro Saharita Becker puts her own feelings on canvas in the face of the usual yet always surprising event, transforming them almost into an exhortation to the observer to make contact with the sensitivity which, if allowed to escape, is capable of letting him grasp the wonder around him. At the same time, however, the artist also seems to emphasise the fleeting nature of life, that it is going much faster than we think towards decline, and therefore the best approach is to savour everything that happens, even the small, negligible details, to live each moment intensely. The canvas Wüstenbruch (Pause in the Desert) depicts a dry, inhospitable and motionless world in its silence, yet Baker leaves us hopeful of a source of life, that central blue which is so reminiscent of water, as if the work were a metaphor for how it is often in the apparently toughest and most detached souls that a soft, fragile interior is hidden, to be protected, or rather hidden, from the rest of the world. In this canvas, the silence seems to be broken, broken by the whisper of a shy emotion that cannot help but exist, leaking out despite the apparent dryness that surrounds it.

In Zärtlichkeitsausbruch (Explosion of Tenderness), the artist uses quicklime, marble dust, acrylic paint, epoxy resin and pigments on Himalayan paper, then glued onto a wooden support to create an artwork of strong three-dimensionality, almost a picto-sculpture, in which she literally carves an apparently soft and delicate feeling that, however, manifests all its intensity, that ability to shake the soul and open it up to a dimension of purity, of feeling far from any ulterior motive, from any attempt by the mind to contain its subtle but resistant force. After her extensive travelling and contact with cultures other than that of her country of origin, cultures with a very individualistic approach in the most positive sense of the term, i.e. oriented towards considering inner strength as the only support on which to draw in order to know oneself and improve one’s life path, Doro Saharita Becker has chosen an expressive freedom that places her in constant evolution and experimentation not only with the awareness of her own emotions but also with techniques and the use of materials that are functional to her way of making art, to her expressive attitude that is fundamental to feel free to be herself. Doro Saharita Becker’s technique is characterised by the application and rapid drying of self-produced pastes and painting materials, with a consequent cracking which is then enriched and filled with materials such as coffee powder, sand and synthetic resin, thus creating relatively heavy and tactile works of art on canvas or wood that are highly appreciated by a large public of art experts and collectors. Doro Saharita Becker has had many exhibitions in Germany.
