Mimma Luppino’s undefined cityscapes, between imagination and memory

There is a tendency in contemporary art to depict a new kind of panorama, that of the city, that of the metropolis, which cannot be separated from current life, leading some artists to replace the landscape with views of buildings, streets and everything that belongs to daily life, that rapid succession of frenetic rhythms and the need to lose oneself in the confusion of the crowd. The artist I am going to talk about today is a great interpreter of this theme in which she shows a particular ability to envelop his artworks in an atmosphere that goes beyond the dynamic and fast-paced atmosphere of the city and dwells on the subtle voice of emotions.

Since the early twentieth century, artists’ attention has shifted from the natural elements to man, with all his complications, fears, anxieties, but also with his ability to cling to life and find new existential ways to overcome the objective difficulties, beyond the horrors of war, that constituted his everyday life. Futurism had already focused its attention on technological works, the human achievements by virtue of which the way of life had completely changed, and so the artworks of Umberto Boccioni, one of the fathers of the pictorial current, appeared as a celebration of the rapid movement of evolution of cities, a tangle of streets and cement in constant throbbing. More or less in the same historical period there was a move towards the indefinite, towards non-adherence to observed reality, which transformed the decomposition of the image into a mode of expression for all the artists who adhered to Abstractionism, among whom Paul Klee was the one who was most linked to the representation of cityscapes, castles and bridges in which evocation and imagination were essential to approach his paintings marked by geometric images.

Another great artist fascinated by cities and, in his case, by the modernity that was modifying the urban landscapes of Milan, the place that was the cradle of his pictorial research, was Mario Sironi, founder of the Novecento group, in which the return to order and figuration contrasted with the avant-garde movements of the time, which instead strongly affirmed a need for distancing and revolution in the way of making art. As the 20th century progressed, various artistic currents emerged, especially in the United States, in which city life, its lights and sometimes the solitude of the multitude were the guidelines and distinctive features, as in Precisionism, of which a young Giorgia O’Keefe was a great representative, or in Edward Hopper’s American Realism, in whose artworks sometimes took centre stage the coldness of cities, and others the suburbs where the individual could not escape solitude, and finally Jeremy Mann’s contemporary Impressionism, which instead celebrates the charm of the metropolis, the skyscrapers, the lights, the nights, the noise and the vitality that can be perceived in every street, representing each of these elements through the impressionist indefiniteness that increases the observer’s involvement.

The artist from Lazio, Mimma Luppino, makes her own the theme of the urban landscape while interpreting it through a personal style in which the overall sensation emerges by virtue of a distant point of observation, as if the emotion needed to take a moment’s detachment before realising the intensity felt when looking at the image she needs to reproduce; the overlap between figuration and abstraction is characteristic of Luppino, that middle ground between the need to go beyond and let the sensation emerge, a priority over any other definition, and the need for what has been, or is being seen, to somehow come out and reach the rational side. Abstractionism thus merges with Expressionism, highlighting urban panoramas from which Luppino moves away, observing them from a distance that for her is functional to discover the whole, not the detail, because what counts is what remains within oneself after having lived, breathed and savoured an experience, even if only interaction with a place can involve one to the point of wanting to take it into one’s emotional treasure chest. Cities become indefinite, they could be anywhere and nowhere, and it is precisely this that distinguishes the artist and consequently involves the observer, that feeling inside an emotional landscape that could belong to anyone’s memory because what counts is the atmosphere surrounding the buildings, the houses, the lights and the silence of beauty in which the gaze is lost. Mimma Luppino plays with the image, enlarging it with the reflection that is actually that of the soul, that of an emotionality that belongs to the human being and that defines the bond with a place, the one in which we are lost and sometimes found again.

The work Lontananze (Distances) encapsulates the main concepts of Mimma Luppino’s style, that subtle nostalgia that emerges a moment after leaving the dimension of living and immersing oneself in a place, that thanks to which it is possible to observe everything through the filter of sensations; Expressionism emerges from the chromatic tones chosen by the artist, from those intense but unreal colors that define the need for the gaze to extend towards plurality, the chorality of the whole, the warmth of the general atmosphere that constitutes everything a human being needs to feel at home. In Periferia (Suburbs) Luppino seems to move a little further away, as if to emphasise how often the suburbs are considered detached from the city and yet just as alive and colourful with their contradictions, the difficulties of being on the fringes without, however, losing that emotional atmosphere that involves the artist as well as the people who live in those neighbourhoods. The artist’s panoramic atmospheres are always nocturnal, almost as if the evening were the moment in which it is possible to listen with greater depth to the true soul, the essence of each place, when people are inside their homes and everything seems quieter, more easily admired.

Always divided between her hometown, Rieti, and Rome, Mimma Luppino cannot help but dedicate a series of paintings to the marvellous bridges over the Tiber, to narrate which she shifts towards a more figurative style, more linked to the real image although always enveloped by that unreal aura of suspension of space and time, that being in the moment or in any other, confusing the eye that wonders about the eternity of those magical places, about the possibility that the artist has captured a current fragment or represented an instant from a distant past. The grattage, those scratches of colour that etch the underlying base, is another characteristic of Mimma Luppino, a characteristic that emerges also in still lifes, as in Fiori (Flowers), a painting within a painting, in which the main image is underlined in its details precisely by those subtle streaks that define and highlight what is important to the artist. When she moves on to narration less tied to the observed reality and more inclined to the concept, to the manifestation of the emotional side of a circumstance or an event, Abstractionism becomes the focal point, figuration is almost completely abandoned in order to focus on the substance, on the agreement between what is perceived and the harmonisation of everything around it; the canvas Ponte della musica (Bridge of Music) belongs to the series more oriented towards emphasising the link between what is perceived and the reality that moves around the concept, according to the spiritualist approach that matter is founded on thought and becomes concrete, uniting, to draw what is felt through interiority. In the course of her long career, which began in the 1970s, Mimma Luppino has taken part in two editions of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto with a personal exhibition, some of her works are included in the Pinacoteca di Ruffano, she has taken part in various exhibitions of the Associazione Cento Pittori di Via Margutta and has exhibited all over Italy, from Rome to Bologna, from Milan to Genoa, from Santa Teresa di Gallura to Terni, receiving wide acclaim from the public and the critics.
